DES MOINES, Iowa - In a surprising turn of events, Iowa's recent spring warm-up followed by freezing temperatures at night has left trees vulnerable to frost damage.
Many homeowners are noticing wilted, shriveled, and crispy leaves or petals on trees that had begun to bloom or leaf out.
According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, while the damage may seem severe, it's typically just a temporary setback.
Healthy trees are expected to recover on their own, with new growth pushing out the damaged leaves over time.
Homeowners should continue providing good care for their trees, including watering during dry spells and mulching to maintain moisture levels.
Despite the setback, experts anticipate that most trees will bounce back as the season progresses.
