 Campus Alerts

The Northwest campus is operating under normal conditions.

IN CASE OF SEVERE WEATHER

The city of Maryville tests its sirens at noon every Thursday.

In the case of severe weather, Northwest advises individuals to be aware of their surroundings, while staying tuned to local television and radio stations.

We believe that our collective action as a community is our best means of detecting potential threats. Our best defense against a threat posed by nature, or a fellow human-being, is three steps: awareness, judgment, and action.

  • Be aware. Each of us — students, professors, staff, and administrators — has a personal responsibility to be aware of our surroundings. Is anything out of normal? Is anyone acting strangely? Being aware is the first step. So, be aware of your surroundings and take note when something or someone is askew.
  • Use good judgment. The second step is to exercise judgment. If something looks out of place or actions are out of the normal, what should I do about it? Communicate! If or when you see something or someone acting out of normal, communicate with others to help you make a judgment about your observation. By doing so, you are able to bring other perspectives into view to inform your action.
  • Take action when necessary. Finally, action is the third defense. If observations of troublesome, out-of-ordinary behaviors occur; and, if it is considered a possible threat to our safety, then you must take action. All of us — not just the university police — are responsible for our collective safety.

Bearcat Alert

(Northwest's Emergency Text Message Service)

Northwest Missouri State University has launched Bearcat Alert, an emergency text-messaging system to increase the University’s ability to communicate with students during times of crisis. The program is voluntary and is open to all Northwest students, faculty and staff. Users must have a Northwest account in order to sign up for alerts. The alerts will cost only what cellular phone plans dictate for normal text messages.

To Sign-Up

Where can I find the channel?
  1. Log into myNorthwest with your Northwest network username/password.
  2. On the Home tab, look for the  Bearcat Alert Text Messaging channel (by default, the channel should be on the left side, see image).
  3. Click the Bearcat Alert link to be taken to an external site.
  4. Provide your up-to-date phone and contact information to start receiving emergency text messages.

Note: If you don't have the channel on your Home tab, you can add the channel to your page. Hover over the Add Content button at the top of the page. The Bearcat Alert Text Messaging channel is located under the General Services/Resources category. Click the channel name to add it to the tab.
