MDC and USDA to study black vultures

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Conservation and the U.S. Department of Agriculture are teaming up for a groundbreaking study aimed at addressing conflicts with black vultures.

This multi-year initiative seeks to gain a deeper understanding of black vulture behaviors, their interactions with humans, and to explore effective management strategies.

While black vultures serve a vital role in the ecosystem, their aggressive tendencies pose challenges for livestock producers, particularly cattle ranchers.

These birds can prey on vulnerable livestock, causing significant financial losses. Additionally, they are known to cause property damage to vehicles, boats, and buildings.

To aid in the study, landowners, cattle ranchers, and bird enthusiasts are encouraged to report sightings or interactions with black vultures sporting white cattle ear tags on their right wings.
