NPPD issues reminder as planting season approaches

COLUMBUS, Neb. - As planting season ramps up, the Nebraska Public Power District is issuing a vital safety reminder to large equipment operators: watch out for power lines.

In the event of contact with a power line, operators are urged to remain inside the vehicle and call 911 or their local power provider immediately.

Exiting the vehicle should only be considered if there's a fire, and even then, it's crucial to jump clear of the vehicle to avoid electrocution.

To prevent accidents, NPPD offers key safety precautions: Review all farm activities near power lines daily and ensure a minimum 20-foot distance; Exercise caution when raising augers or grain truck beds, as power lines may be closer than they appear; Use a spotter to maintain safe distances, especially with large equipment; Lower portable augers or elevators to under 14 feet before transportation to avoid unexpected incidents.

Farmers are encouraged to prioritize safety by adhering to these guidelines and accessing additional safety information on NPPD's website.
