Northwest Student Receives Misdemeanor Charges

A Northwest student is charged after he tried to hurt another student earlier this month.

Nodaway County Prosecuting Attorney Robert Rice charged DeAndre Nichols of Maryville with Assault in the third degree. Nichols tried to hurt Demetrius Boone by striking him across the face Sept. 3.

Rice says he will not file criminal charges against Boone because of Missouri's self-defense law.

Under this law, a person has the right to defend themselves from an attack.
