Karen Hawkins remembered by Sigma Sigma Sigma at Northwest

Remembrance activities have been scheduled all this week for a Maryville woman and Northwest student who was killed in 1995.

Karen Hawkins, who was also a member of the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority on campus, was sexually assaulted and killed in April of 1995 by a coworker she had known most of her life. This week, the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority has held a number of events in Hawkins' memory, culminating with tonight's annual Silent Walk at 7:30 p.m.

The walk, which will start at the Bell Tower, is put on each year by the sorority to raise awareness of the effects of sexual assault and honor Hawkins' memory.

This week's events are co-sponsored by the University Police Department and the Nodaway County Sheriff's Office.
