Missouri Severe Weather Awareness Week provides critical weather information

This week is Missouri Severe Weather Awareness Week.

Each day of the week has a different theme for severe weather awareness. Today is Preparedness Day, and National Weather Service meteorologist Chris Bowman says it's important to be prepared for any and all severe weather as the spring approaches.

Tomorrow is Tornado Safety Day, and the big event will be a statewide tornado drill at 10 a.m. Outdoor weather sirens and weather alert radios across the state will sound, signaling the beginning of the drill and indicating people should practice taking shelter. If a tornado shelter is not available, the safest shelter location is a windowless basement or an interior room on the lowest level of a building.

Wednesday is Flash Flood Safety Day. Thursday is Severe Thunderstorm Day. And Friday is Communication and NOAA Weather Radio Day.

Bowman says staying weather aware is important at all times, especially in the spring when severe weather is common because it's hard to predict most storms with more than 2-4 day's notice.

Stay tuned to KXCV/KRNW for any weather updates as they become available.
