Missouri students plan walkouts in support of gun safety

In the wake of the shooting in Parkland, Florida on Valentine's Day, several protests are planned throughout this spring to try and force Congress' hand on gun legislation.

As the protests - scheduled for this Wednesday and April 20 of this year - gain popularity, however, some students are worrying about disciplinary action from their schools and whether it will have an impact on their future.

According to a release from the Missouri News Service, however, some schools in Missouri are publicly taking to social media and interviews to let potential students know that, if they face any disciplinary action for walking out of school in protest to gun violence, they will still get a fair shake in the admissions process.

On Twitter, Washington University in St. Louis tweeted the words "March On," and Webster University spokesperson Patrick Giblin said in an interview that Webster's admissions department would see it "as a show of leadership on behalf of the students."

In northwestern Missouri, the story is no different. Northwest Missouri State University communications director Mark Hornickel says the university would not look negatively on students with disciplinary issues resulting from the walkouts.

Missouri Western State University has a similar policy, according to associate vice president of enrollment and student retention Paul Orscheln.

The first walkout is scheduled for this Wednesday at 10 a.m. Several universities throughout Missouri, including Northwest, are hosting walkout events
