Seventeen years after tragedy struck the United States, Maryville Public Safety organized an event to remember the men and women who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.

The program called The Sacrifice Continues was held at the Freedom Rock Plaza located in Franklin Park in Maryville.

Fire Captain Phil Rickabaugh says there's one main message he wants people to take away from the event.

"Never forget."

"The sacrifice continues, and we're still losing first responders from the side effects of 9/11" Rickabaugh said. "We're still losing citizens of New York City that were there that day from the side effects."

Rickabaugh says the 9/11 memorial is also a good way to promote the hard work first responders locally do on a daily basis.

"The thing I got out of 9/11 is something we deal with here everyday in rural Missouri. The community is always tight-knit here. The effects of 9/11 brought the whole nation together, and it was just like 'hey, you know, we do this everyday in Maryville in rural Missouri."

First Responders from Nodaway County and community members came together this morning to remember the fallen from the 9/11 terrorist attack 17 years ago.
