Beware of KCP&L scammers

Some KCP&L and Westar Energy customers have been receiving calls from individuals claiming to work for the energy companies demanding payment in the form of pre-paid cards. These scammers prey on a sense of urgency, sometimes even quoting information like amount due in order to get customers to settle their debt under threat of disconnection. Media Communications Manager Gina Penzig says there are a few ways to confirm the identity of a real KCP&L employee.

Penzig adds that there are a number of options for those who receive these calls.

"So if a call like this is received, they can sure let us know.  They can also call their local law enforcement and let them know.  Also the attorney general has a page for consumer fraud reports and it can be reported there as well."

Penzig also suggested that those who may have sent payment contact law enforcement about the matter.
