Historic bridge up for grabs

The Missouri Department of Transportation is accepting proposals until the end of the year for the re-use of the seven-panel Pratt Pony Truss Bridge on Route P-P just east of Route 139 in Sullivan County. Senior Historic Preservation Specialist Karen Daniel says the bridge is considered historic.

"This bridge is eligible for listing on the national register of historic places because it's a good early example of its type - of the Pratt Pony Trusss type.  And it also represents the era of the expansion of the state highway system in the 1930s, of our taking over the supplementary road system, and re-using earlier bridges to take over that system."

Since the bridge is eligible to be considered historic, federal law requires any state proposing demolition of a historic bridge to first make it available for donation to a state, locality or responsible private entity. Individuals and organizations interested in taking all or part of the bridge are invited to submit a proposal to MoDot for re-use by December 31st.
