Nebraska to keep electricity rates flat

Nebraska Public Power District will see no overall increase in average electric rates for 2019. This marks the sixth year that retail customers will see no increase, and the second year for wholesale customers. Spokesperson Mark Becker says the lack of increase is largely due to employees working to cut costs.

"Our staff works very hard to become more efficient in their work.  One of the things on our retail side is we've added automated metering equipment through about 43 communities.  Again that's another area where we can reduce rates.  We don't have send a truck out to handle the electric meter for a move-out or a move-in."

Becker says that efforts to keep rates low will continue into the next year.

"Our retail side, we're going to do a second year of putting in automated meter reader information.  Our staff will look very closely at the expenses and look to see where we can cut costs wherever possible, keep rates from going up in the future."

Becker added that NPPD's long-term goal is to keep wholesale rates in the lowest 25% quartile, and that their retail rates are the 17th lowest among utilities in the U.S.
