Baker puts up big numbers in professional debut

Former Northwest Missouri State University quarterback Jonathan Baker quickly made an impact in his professional football debut Sunday morning.

The Maryville native put up big numbers as the Les Cougars de Saint-Ouen l' Aumône of the French Football Federation rolled to a 53-21 win in the season-opener.

Baker threw for four touchdowns, 220 yards and no interceptions on 20 of 27 passing in the win over Les Falcons Bron.

He led a scoring drive ending in a 16-yard touchdown pass to Mickaël Serre on the Cougars second possession of the game.

Saint-Ouen l' Aumône led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter, and opened it up in the second quarter.

Baker threw for two more touchdowns in the second period as the Cougars went into halftime with a 30-0 lead. He threw his final touchdown pass in the, a 29-yard completion to Mahamadou Yattabare, in the third quarter to open up a 37-0 advantage.

Baker joined the team just two weeks ago, and was immediately inserted as the starting quarterback. He is one of two Americans on the French football team that plays in a city just north of Paris.

The Cougars have a bye week this Sunday, and will play their first road game February 18 against the Rouen Leopards.
