Northwest basketball kicks off the MIAA season Thursday with a doubleheader against Lincoln University, and it also marks the start to the promotions schedule.

Thursday night will be "Christmas in the Ville" which will feature a new wrinkle called Silent Night.

Silent Night, made famous by Taylor University, is a promotion where all of the fans remain quiet and don't cheer until Northwest reaches 10 points. At that time, the crowd whips into a frenzy.

YouTube videos of the tradition at Taylor show fans spilling onto the floor after the team hits the scoring mark.

MacKenzie Magwire, Northwest Assistant AD for Marketing and Promotions, said both head basketball coaches were on-board for the promotion and the next step is to inform the fans of what to expect.

"I ended up sitting down with coaches Ben McCollum and Austin Meyer and they both said 'yep, sure, let's go for it.' And so we're just trying to push it out to the community and getting them to understand that we have the tradition of standing for the first points and then cheering. Now we're letting them know that we want to be quiet until 10 points. That's something that my interns have been working on, and they've really taken it and run with it so far."

The Silent Night promotion will take place during the men's basketball game.

There will also be a toy drive for Toys for Tots, pictures with Santa Bobby, and free Kool Kats.

The Bearcat women's basketball game starts at 5:30pm Thursday followed by the men's game at 7:30pm. The Bearcat Radio Network broadcast will begin at 5:10pm with pregame.
