Williams, Schneider join Northwest men's basketball staff

The bench will take on a new look next season for Northwest Missouri State University men's basketball.

Two months after associate head coach Austin Meyer accepted the head coaching position of the Bearcat women's basketball team, Ben McCollum has solidified his coaching staff for the 2018-19 season.

Bryston Williams and Zach Schneider will join the program as assistant coaches.

Both Williams and Schneider played at Northwest under McCollum, and were suiting up during the most successful chapter of program history.

Williams was part of McCollum's first recruiting class in 2009. The Bearcats went from 12-15 his freshman year to a 24-9 record, conference title and NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearance as a senior.

The St. Joseph native has spent the last two years with the Memphis Grizzlies affiliate in the NBA G-League, the Memphis Hustle.

McCollum believes Williams will thrive coaching at the college level.

"Pro basketball is completely different than college in the way it's set up. It becomes a business, it becomes very professional-based. For him, I think he likes the relationships of college and being able to coach kids, and things of that nature."

Schneider ended his playing career at Northwest in 2017, and went down as one of the most prolific shooters in MIAA history.

The Prairie Village, Kansas native is the conference's record holder in three-point makes for a career with 370. He was also a key player as the Bearcats won four straight MIAA regular season championships, reached four straight NCAA Tournament Sweet 16s, and won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 2017.

Last year, Schneider served as the Northwest men's basketball graduate assistant and was also a graduate assistant with the Student Athlete Success Program.
