Grant for new tech received by Nodaway Sheriff's Department

The Nodaway County Sheriff's department has received over $6,000 from the Gladys M. Rickard Charitable Trust Grant to purchase new equipment to investigate crimes involving cell phones. Sheriff Randy Strong says the new technology will allow law enforcement to recover the data on a suspect's phone.

"The device is called a CellBrite. We had one here in the past, but due to changes in technology, it is no longer useful and CellBrite is no longer going to keep it running. We had to buy a new one. The machine is very expensive.  So we made an application to the Rickard Trust to see if we can get one."

Strong adds that the Cellbrite will benefit the whole county.

"In the grant application, we put down that it would be utilized by the law enforcement agencies that serve Nodaway County, so you have the Maryville Public Safety, the Sherrif's Department, the campus police, and the prosecutor's office.  And we all have a gentleman's agreement that every year out of our budget, we'll contribute to pay the annual fee for this instrument and support someone in training, because training is also very expensive."

The Rickard Charitible Trust provides funds to programs that have few streams of income, but benefit the entire county.
