High wind warning issued for area

A high wind warning has been issued for parts of our listening area in the following counties of Missouri are Nodaway, Andrew, Buchanan, Clinton, Worth, Gentry, Atchison and Holt county. In Kansas are Atchison and Doniphan  County. In Nebraska Nemaha and Richardson County. In Iowa are Fremont, Page, Taylor and Ringgold Counties. Meteorologist for the National Weather Service Jimmy Barham says a high wind warning is when winds gust up to 58 miles per hour.

"Pretty much we are either looking for sustained winds greater than 40 mph or frequent gusts of greater than or equal to 58 mph.  Is what a high wind warning is. Those winds are strong enough to damage trees and definitely impede vehicles on the road, especially east-west running roads..  Definitely something to take serious."

Barham adds a really strong low pressure over Iowa with a really strong high pressure over the Dakotas which makes the really strong winds.

"Really strong winds happen right in between those two features.   That feature is coming right down to the Missouri River into that area and it's kind of overseeing where three of four thousand feet above the surface we're having  60-65 mph winds and those winds are mixing down into our area behind the cold front."

The high wind warning is in effect until noon.
