Humane Society gives tips to protect pets in cold

The Humane Society of Missouri is encouraging pet owners to be aware of the health and safety of their pets during the cold temperatures.
The Society has released six tips to help keep pets healthy in the winter. Assistant medical director for the Animal Center of Mid-America, Doctor Travis Arndt, says one of the tips is to bring pets inside.

"Dogs and cats just like people are susceptible to hypothermia and frostbite and really can't handle being left outside for long periods of time.  Provide a cozy space.  Any outdoor animal is going to require a well-insolated trap-free appropriate-size dog house. You want to make sure it has a flexible sturdy cover to protect against winds."

The other tips include checking the animal's paws for cracking or bleeding, considering a dog sweater or coat for animals with thinner fur, cleaning up any winter chemicals such as antifreeze, and scheduling a winter wellness exam.  For more information visit hsmo.org .
