#NoMOHeartDiseaet campaign launched

The American Heart Association recently launched #NoMOHeartDisease, a year long initiative created to increase awareness about heart disease in Missouri. Communications Director Julie Lay says the program is designed to remind Missourians that heart disease affects thousands of Missouri residents every year.

"Really we wanted to make sure that we could do something to help Missourians understand more about heart disease. Let them know that it is definitely something that affects them and really highlight all of the different people and places in Missouri that are affected by heart disease."

The initiative highlights a different heart disease survivor each month. For January, that's Jana Smith.

"This month we are talking about Jana Smith. She is a heart disease survivor from Joplin, Missouri.  She actually is a third generation heart disease survivor, and since she has a five-year-old son, she wants to make sure that her son doesn't have to suffer the same loss as she and her mother and grandmother had.  She's really working to help educate Missourians on what they can do to find out what their family connection to heart disease is.        And to know that even if they do have a family connection to it, there are things they can do to help protect their own health and the health or their family around them."
