St. Joseph leads Missouri in employment growth

The Missouri Department of Economic Development had good news for St. Joseph. According to Director of Communication and Marketing for the St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce, Kristi Bailey, the city leads Missouri in employment growth.

"We recently we read the November jobs report from the Missouri Department of Economic Development. And it had some really good news for St. Joseph economory.  We had a 1.6% growth from November of last year to this year in our labor force."

Bailey adds that in addition to employment growth, St. Joseph is a leader in hourly wages.

"We are only behind St. Louis and Kansas City.  Meaning that the average wage in St. Joseph is higher than the rest of the smaller metros in the state."

Bailey credits the city's success to the addition of new businesses in the area.

"We've been working hard in the past few months and years to not only grow our existing businesses and help them add more jobs that are high paying.  But we've also been able to add new companies to St. Joseph that are  paying a higher wage."

The unemployment rate in St. Joseph is 2.7 percent, much lower than the U.S. and Missouri averages.
