The InterServ Early Childcare and Education Center at Mitchell Woods named MO Breastfeeding Friendly

A St. Joseph Child Care Center has been named a Missouri Breastfeeding Friendly Child Care Facility.

The InterServ Early Childcare and Education Center at Mitchell Woods has become at breastfeeding friendly child care facility. The distinction means the facility provides time, space and other benefits to encourage breastfeeding after a mother returns to work. Public Information Officer with the city of St. Joseph Health Department, Stephanie Malita says the distinction will be a benefit to mothers in St. Joseph.

"The state of Missouri indicates that over 70% of Missouri mothers chose breastfeeding.  That's the optimal form of infant feeding.  Yet a lot of women don't reach their breastfeeding goals.  The CDC - Center for Disease Control Prevention -  has identified that returning to work as one fo the main barriers to continuation of breastfeeding.  So when a child care facility and an employer are both breastfeeding friendly, that just helps a mom feels supported and gives her the tools she needs to continue breastfeeding."

A certificate presentation will take place at the Mitchell Woods facility today at 9:30 a.m.
