Three Northwest students selected for legislative internship program

Three Northwest Missouri State University students were selected to intern with state lawmakers this spring and learn about Missouri government as part of the University's legislative internship program. The internship began this month and ends in May. The university annually sends students to Jefferson City to gain valuable experience in the legislative process and help them understand how Missouri is governed. Sophomore political science major James Palmer, freshman political science major Kendra Robbins, and senior video broadcast productions major Molly Gardner were given the opportunity.

Gardner says that she loves the experience in Jefferson City, getting the opportunity to meet someone new every day, and learning about their views on politics and what their title means to them.

"So the experience has been a lot of fun recently.  We attend sessions where they talk about bills that have been on the floor.  They will debate about them and talk about how they can make it a better bill. And if there's questions about the bill that's where they kind of bring it upon everybody else. It's really interesting how session takes place.  It's a lot different than how they show it on TV.  There's a lot of debating and a lot of fighting I guess is a good way to put it."

Gardner also said that she wants to make connections that she would not have the chance to make in the classroom and be exposed to the core state politics.

"Since I work in the House of Representatives, I do get to encounter a lot more people.  There are 127 people in the House of Representatives, meanwhile there's 50 in the Senate. So I'm glad to get the opprotunity to work in the House of Representatives because there's a lot more chances to make connections."
