The first winter storm of 2019 is forecasted to hit the region this weekend.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory for northwest Missouri beginning at 6pm and running until Saturday at 6pm.

The NWS believes the area could see significant snowfall totals through Saturday evening.

"We're expecting things to switch over pretty quickly (from rain) into snow," Jimmy Barham, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said. "It looks like it'll start to get a rain-snow mix around 6-7pm in Maryville and that area. Then it'll be all snow from there on out. It looks like our highest snowfall intensity is going to be between midnight and 6am."

Barham said three to five inches of snow is possible.
