Chronic Wasting Disease found in deer

With Missouri deer season over and results put together from the harvest, Chronic Wasting Disease has entered headlines both in the state and across the country. Nodaway County Conservation Agent Nate Carr says the disease has been a problem in several states that may not have taken measures to prevent it.

"Look throughout the country and see some states that hadn't been as proactive and you can see how CWD has spread throughout the majority or their herd.  In some states, we're looking at 50% of their adult bucks have contracted CWD.  Missouri, however, has been fairly proactive in trying to stabilize this.  We really stay on top of testing."

Carr adds Missouri, even with the extra precautions, has still had to deal with CWD but not at an alarming rate.

"We did find more positives this year because people have yet to find a good cure for it.  So, I think, until then, we are going to continue to find positives.  We did find 28 positives in 11 counties throughout Missouri, but you're looking at 28 positives out of 28,000 deer that have been sampled.  So we're still looking at an extremely low percentage."
