City Manager talks potholes and road repair

Potholes continue to be an ongoing problem for communities in the Midwest. Maryville City Manager Greg McDanel says this past winter's weather has been particularly hard on roads.

"It's not necessarily the volume of snow we've had, but it's the type of events, the duration of the events, the frequency of events and how they've just all stacked up on top of each other from a moisture and freeze/thaw process that has just created havoc of potholes throughout the community.  Our staff has been keeping up with it with cold milling patching which is a temporary short-term fix.  As soon as we get a couple of weeks of warm, dry weather and we get some hot mix asphalt, we'll continue to go around town and fix those where we can."

McDanel says one area that will receive a lot of attention will be South Main from Halsey to the Lincoln curve.

"That's an area this winter has just been so destructive on and it's falling apart in multiple areas.  So we're going ahead and work with the Department of Transportation to use some of our STP Funding and overlay that stretch with a brand new roadway.  So we're getting ready to approve engineering on that.  That should be a project that gets to construction pretty quickly."

McDanel adds snow removal was costly in January and February when the city spent nearly twice as much as normal with over a $100,000 dollars going toward snow removal and road repair.
