Colo-Rectal Cancer Awareness Month encourages testing

March is National Colo-Rectal Cancer Awareness Month. RN and Health Educator with the Nodaway County Health Department, Katherine Hawley, says prevention is one the most important messages during Colo-Rectal Cancer Awareness Month.

"Colo-Rectal cancer almost always develops from pre-cancerous polyps which are normal growths in the colon or rectum.  Screening tests can find these pre-cancerous polyps so that they can be removed before they turn into cancer.  So it's really important to get tested."

Hawley adds regular screening usually begins around age 50 but can be started earlier based on family history and other factors.  For more information on Colo-Rectal Cancer awareness visit cdc.gov or nodawaypublichealth.org for direct links.
