Community Blood Center encourages donations after declaring blood emergency

A blood emergency has been declared in the region. The Community Blood Center is calling for all eligible blood donors who can safely attend their blood drives to make an immediate appointment to donate. Director of Donor Equipment Chelsea Tibbetts says there a few reasons why the blood supplies are critically low.

"When individuals are ill or might be taking care of those who are ill, in addition to bad weather and difficulty in travel - all of those can impact blood donations, especially during the winter when this is at an all-time high.  It is the flu season.  So many people do become ill.  But we do see seasonal drops in donations.  And in the winter, that is the main culprit."

Tibbetts adds there are several donor sites for people who have the time or the ability to donate.

"Anyone that does have the time and the ability, we have several donor centers around the area or service area.  We also have mobile blood drives that we hold every day.  We hold roughly 10 blood drives a day and we hold them all over our service area.  So greatly encourage anyone able to donate, take somebody with them who can also donate, and look for the nearest blood drive or donor center.  We're open seven days a week and so we are ready and willing to take any donors that we can to help replenish our inventory."

A blood drive is scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, March 12th from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 102 North Main Street, in Maryville. For more information contact your local Community Blood Center.
