Northwest Missouri State University recognized its Influential Women of Northwest to culminate a series of activities commemorating Women's History Month last week. The program, held Friday, was to honor outstanding female members of Northwest's faculty and staff as well as Northwest students. The Northwest community in February nominated female students, faculty, and staff at Northwest who have positively influenced lives and made outstanding contributions to the University community. Kenna Johnson, an advisor and coach in Academic and Retention Services, said the nomination response was both overwhelming and exciting.

"We put a call for nominations out in the month of February.  The nominations closed on March 1st.  The committee convened on March 4th to select our recipients.  We were quite overwhelmed and overjoyed at the response that we received in nominations as we received over 100 nominations."

After the committee convened, the members of the committee decided to rename the award to honor a Northwest student who unexpectedly passed away last month.

"From reading her nomination and knowing the impact that she had on our campus as a resident assistant at Dietrich Hall as well as someone who devoted her summers to college prep programs, we decided that we not only would bestow the student award upon her, but in commitee we decided that from this point on the Influential Student of Northwest Award would be known as the Lonnae Young Influential Student Award."

The Influential Women of Northwest award recipients were Kat Bilbo for outstanding faculty member, Pat Wyatt for outstanding staff member, and Lonnae Young recieving the Lonnae Young Influential Student award. Additionally, Northwest President Dr. John Jasinski in suprise recognition, honored Dr. Jamie Hooyman for being named the first female Northwest provost in 2017.
