St. Joseph Open Burning Dates start April 1st

The St. Joseph Open Burning dates have been announced for this Spring. The dates residents are allowed to burn are Monday, April 1 through Sunday, April 21. Public Information Officer for the City of St. Joesph Health Department Stephanie Malita says there are certain guidelines during this burning period.

"It will be every day between the hours of 10am and 3:30 in the afternoon.  So the only things you can burn is yard waste for a residential property, so leaves, brush, small logs that have grown on the property.  You are not allowed to burn trash, paper, lumber, or building debris.  Fires have to be contained in an upright cylindrical metal container with a volume of up to 55 gallons."

Malita adds other guidelines include your container must be located at least 15 feet away from all buildings, you may only have one barrel burning on your residence at a time and you must have someone and someway to extinguish the fire if it gets out of hand. Malita says some days bans may be put in place due to weather.

"There are days that either the Fire Chief or the Health Director envokes a temporary ban typically due to high winds."

Malita says during bans all burning is prohibited. Again the Spring Open Burning Dates for the City of St Joseph are Monday, April 1 through Sunday, April 21.
