Tornado Drill planned for March 5th

Even though the region is still experiencing bitter cold tempertures, emergency management agencies around Missouri are preparing for spring storms. The annual statewide tornado drill is scheduled for Tuesdsay at 10 a.m. Nodaway County Emergency Management Director, Christi Forney, says the annual spring drill is important for area residents.

"So what that means for the city of Maryville and Nodaway County, we participate in the drill by sounding our sirens at that time. So we encourage schools, businesses, just folks at home to practice your plan if you can.  If you can't actually implement or put your plan in place at that time, mabye just talk about and make sure that everyone knows what their plan is and where they need to go."

The drill is part of Severe Weather Preparedness Week March 4-8th. Forney says it's a good week to put a plan in place before severe weather hits the area.

"Think ahead.  If you can have an emergency kit in place to where you're gonna go in an actual event.  And that kit needs to include a flashlight, a radio - preferably a weather radio, batteries, bottled water.  Something we don't think about a lot is hard soled shoes.  Sometimes we may just run for cover and be barefoot, or maybe have on some flip flops or something.  But if you had actual damage to your home, you'd need a good sturdy pair of shoes if there were debris, nails, glass, whatever laying around.  It's something to think about."

The National Weather Service will also conduct a social media campaign next week.  Monday will emphasize having a plan, Tuesday tornadoes, Wednesday lightning, Thursday hail, and Friday flooding.
