Volunteers filled sandbags in St. Joseph area

Volunteers in the St. Joseph area have come together to help fill sandbags in an effort to slow flooding of the Missouri River in northwest Missouri. Public Information Officer with the City of St. Joseph, Mary Robertson, says they partnered with United Way of St. Joseph to organize activities that resulted in over 106 thousand sandbags being filled.

"A large portion of those sandbags went to fill gaps in the levees.  We do have several areas in our levees where we have lower elevations.  So we had to build walls with those sandbags to raise up those elevations along the banks of the river on both sides.  From that the rest of them have gone to protect public and private assets in the community.  We've also partnered with Buchanan County to help protect some of their levees as well."

Robertson also credits Americorp volunteers from St. Louis with helping them with their efforts.
