DES MOINES, Iowa - Despite the cold, many take up winter paddling this time of year, but the Iowa Department of Natural Resources recommends that paddlers understand the dangers.
Outreach Coordinator with the Iowa DNR Todd Robertson told KXCV/KRNW that paddlers can risk getting hypothermia and cold water shock if you fall in the water and recommends some safety tips.
Robertson adds that having proper layers and protection is important and suggest wearing a life jacket and a dry suit, and to never paddle alone no matter how experienced you are.
