DES MOINES, Iowa - An invasive species may have found its way into some household aquariums in Iowa.
The state's Department of Natural resources confirmed that some moss balls sold in the pet stores in Iowa were contaminated with zebra mussels, which can cause damage to the food chain and infrastructure if released on lakes or rivers.
Invasive Species Coordinator Kim Bogenschutz told KXCV/KRNW that the affected products have been pulled from shelves.
Aquarium owners who have purchased moss balls in the last month should place them in boiling water or soak them in vinegar or diluted bleach before sealing them in a plastic bag.
