Area farmers need to keep an eye on their corn crops

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Differing amounts of rainfall in our listening area earlier this month have produced varying results with local farmers and their corn.

Field specialist in agronomy from the University Missouri-Extension's Office Wayne Flanary told KXCV/KRNW that some farmers are dealing with heavy amounts of rainfall and floods this season which could result in nitrogen deficient corn crop, which can have a negative affect.

Flanary said the situation is not dire yet with soil temperatures still relatively cool, but that farmers will need to keep a close watch on their corn's nitrogen in June by monitoring the colors of their crop.

Yellow corn indicates that the crop needs supplemental nitrogen. There are multiple nitrogen products including urea and liquid nitrogen that can counteract any deficiency.
