Emerald ash borer continues to spread throughout MO

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Conservation continues to raise the alarm about an invasive tree-killing beetle which is now in 89 Missouri counties.

Media Specialist for the MDC Robert Hemmelgarn told KXCV/KRNW that emerald ash borers kill 99% of ash trees, which could potentially wipe out numerous ash trees in a short amount of time, causing economic and ecological challenges.

Hemmelgarn says Woodpecker damage, growing sprouts, and major branch loss could indicate the presence of emerald ash borers in ash trees.

Dead or dying ash trees can become very brittle and should be removed promptly. For more information about the insects and treatments for ash trees, visit mdc.mo.gov.
