Iowa DNR reminds boaters about hitchhikers

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa Department of Conservation wants to remind boaters before the 4th of July weekend to be vigilant in preventing the spread of invasive aquatic species.

Kim Bogenshutz, the Aquatic Invasive Species Program Coordinator for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, told KXCV/KRNW that aquatic invasive species can be a serious problem.

Invasive organisms can travel to other ecosystems by hitchhiking on boats and equipment that will move from one pond or stream to another.

Bogenschutz reminds boaters to clean their boat, drain all the water, and dry anything that gets wet.
