DNR: Pheasant hunting numbers increase

BOONE, Iowa - Pheasant hunters in Iowa hunted the most roosters in over a decade during the 2020 season. Nearly 300,000 roosters were harvested in 2020 compared to 284,000 during the 2019 season.

Upland Wildlife Research Biologist for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources Todd Bogenschutz told KXCV/KRNW that he believes the pandemic was part of the reason for the increase harvest.

He said there were 10,000 more hunters in 2020 than their were the year prior, adding that the increased harvest will not have an effect on future pheasant populations.

A roadside survey will take place in August to assess the pheasant population prior to the 2021 season which begins Oct. 30.
