JOHNSTON, Iowa - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is urging boaters to be wary of carbon monoxide poisoning while out on the water this summer.
Carbon monoxide is admitted from boat exhausts and anyone who is near the exhaust could be exposed.
Susan Stocker, Boating Law Administrator and Education Coordinator for the Iowa DNR, says symptoms for carbon monoxide poisoning could include, headache, weakness, nausea, and loss of consciousness which could result in drowning.
Stocker said boaters can minimize exposure risk by installing marine carbon monoxide detectors, putting children in the forward-most seating area of the boat, and maintain fresh circulation at all times.
