BOONE, Iowa - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is announcing that cottontail rabbit season is open.
Upland Game Research Biologist for the Iowa DNR Todd Bogenschutz told KXCV/KRNW that although numbers are down from last year, Iowa still has an abundant rabbit population with the best numbers in the south and east central parts of the state.
Last year, there was about 16,000 hunters harvesting more than 76,000 rabbits. Cottontail rabbit season lasts through February 28 with hours from sunrise to sunset. Jackrabbit season is closed.
