ST. LOUIS - The Catholic Bishops of Missouri are speaking out against the recent execution of a Missouri inmate. In a press release, the Bishops expressed their disappointment in the execution of Ernest Johnson.
Johnson's attorney had claimed that executing Johnson would violate the 8th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which prohibits executing intellectually disabled people.
In their press release the Bishops say that while Johnson's crimes were heinous, the state should stop using the death penalty as a means with dealing with violent crimes.
They add that the death penalty does not make Missouri a safer or more civil state.
