DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says that residents should hold off on pruning their oak trees until later this fall.
Forest health program leader with the DNR Tivon Freely says that pruning them too early can allow for the spread of oak wilt, a fungal disease that can kill an oak tree in less than a year.
Freely says symptoms of oak wilt vary depending on the species of oak tree, but that owners should look for leaves turning brown at the tips and falling early in the season.
