COLUMBUS, Neb. - The Nebraska Public Power District is reminding farmers to be safe around powerlines this harvest season.
The NPPD says a lot of accidents come when harvesters are rushing through their work, and not taking their time to observe surroundings or taking the right precautions.
Grant Otten with the NPPD told KXCV/KRNW that machinery doesn't even need to touch powerlines for life-threatening electrical shocks.
Otten adds that if you do come into contact with powerlines, you should stay in your vehicle and call 911 right away to explain the situation so they can come out and de-energize the line.
If there is a reason you need to leave your vehicle, such as a fire, you should jump as far away from your vehicle as possible and land on both feet, and shuffle away from the vehicle.
