DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is urging public to act fast if they want to get shady trees for next summer.
Urban Forestry Program Specialist with the Iowa DNR Gabriele Edwards says planting a shade tree now is a good time to kick-start the growth, especially with the harsh, drought-like conditions we've been having in the recent summers.
Edwards says the cutoff is the first to second week of November whenever the area sees the first deep frost, which could harm the tree if it's not established in the ground.
It is also important to keep watering the trees until the first frost happens; then you should start watering it less and less.
