JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Conservation has released data from an annual survey of turkey production, which showed slight improvement.
This comes after the MDC launched a new project last year to investigate factors that affect turkey production.
Biologist Reina Tyl says that with more data from the project, the MDC hopes to mitigate factors that are detrimental to turkey production.
This year's survey showed a statewide poultry-to-hen ratio (or PHR) of 1.0, up from the five year average of 0.9.
The Northwest region's PHR was 1.3, up from its five year average of 1.2. The poultry-to-hen ratio gives a measure of turkey nesting success and poultry survival.
Detailed reports from this year's survey as well as previous years are available at mdc.mo.gov.
