COVID-19 has forced changes to the sports landscape over the last 11 months, and another came down the pipe Friday morning for Division 2 college basketball.
The NCAA released regional sites for the first three rounds of the men's and women's national tournaments. The Central Region, which is home to the MIAA and NSIC, will send its men's basketball teams to Aberdeen, SD, while the women's tournament will be held in Warrensburg, MO.
That means that if Northwest claims the number one seed in the region for the fifth year in a row, the Bearcats will not be hosting.
Northern State won the bid on the men's side, and will play on their home floor in the tournament. The Wolves and the Bearcats are the frontrunners for the top seed. The two teams are a combined 28-1 this season, and are side by side in the NABC Coaches Poll at two and three.
Central Missouri won the bid to host the women's NCAA Central Region Tournament. The Jennies were set to play at home in the first round last season when COVID-19 shut the regional down. UCM is in a three-way tie atop the MIAA along with Fort Hays and Nebraska Kearney.
The NCAA Tournament will get underway March 12 with the first round for the women and March 13 for the men.
