DES MOINES, Iowa - After a mild start to the winter, ice is beginning to form on lakes and ponds, making ice fishing a great opportunity to get out of the house and have fun.
But there are hazards involved and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources wants anglers and others to know how to stay safe.
Chief of Fisheries with the Iowa DNR Joe Larscheid also recommends bringing safety items like a life jacket, extra dry clothes, and ice cleats, and to not fish alone.
