WASHINGTON - Smoking not only takes a toll on your lungs, but a new study shows it takes a toll on your wallet as well.
According to the financial website WalletHub, smoking costs America more than $300 billion a year and they have also broken down the cost by state.
The total cost over a lifetime, for a smoker in Missouri, is nearly $1.8 million, the third lowest in the country. In Nebraska, it's nearly $2 million, while in Kansas and Iowa, it is over $2 million.
WalletHub looked at several metrics, including the cost of cigarettes and medical costs associated with smoking. The costliest place in America to be a smoker is in Washington D.C.
