WHITE CLOUD, Kan. - More and more Native American tribes are asking, "What happened?"
This comes after a report from the U.S. Department of Interior that documented more than 500 deaths of Indigenous children at U.S.-run boarding schools, but experts say it's far from a complete count.
There were two boarding schools in our listening area, both in Kansas. Highland had the Iowa and Sac and Fox Indian Mission School, and White Cloud had the Iowa and Sac and Fox of Missouri Boarding School.
Vice Chairman and Tribal Historic Preservation Officer with the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska, Lance Foster, says reports and information like these are incredibly sad.
As for the site of the boarding school in Highland, Foster says the tribe owns the land and plans on reopening it as a museum and community resource.
