Forest Wildlife Biologist for Iowa DNR Jim Coffey exclaims that abandoned fawn is completely normal deer behavior, as the mother is usually close by and checks in on the fawn every few hours and nurses it.

Coffey also says the worst thing someone can do is rescue the fawn, saying the best course of action is to leave it be or return it if you have handled it.
