Teal hunting starts this week in Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa - Hunters can enjoy Iowa's wetlands and shallow lakes starting this Thursday.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources will begin its teal-only hunting season statewide on Sept. 1 due to the teal population increasing.

Favorable breeding conditions last spring should increase the migration of young birds this year and with teal moving into Iowa late August, the bird numbers can improve overnight with the change in weather up north.

Todd Bogenschutz, upland game biologist for the Iowa DNR, says hunters should scout areas before opening day.

Since this season is teal-only, hunters must properly identify their target to avoid shooting other species. For more information visit iowadnr.gov.
